UM SHOWS COMMENDABLE PROGRESS IN JANUARY 2018 WEBOMETRICS RANKING OF WORLD UNIVERSITIES

Webometrics is the world’s largest and most acknowledge academic ranking for higher education institutions based on the presence and impact provided by their web domain. The ranking is published twice annually, with the relevance of ensuring institutions are providing webs that exhibit meticulous information of their activities and academic programmes offered. It is parallel with the current demand of 21st century where the web is the most significant window for education institutions to engage with the society.

Based on the January 2018 ranking, University of Malaya (UM) is currently ranked at 411th in the world, and 58th in Asia. It is an upgrade from the last ranking in July 2017 which was at 418th and 65th in the world and Asia respectively.

Besides overall ranking, there are also four indicators; presence, visibility, transparency (or openness), and excellence (or scholar) that are assessed. In January 2018, there are improvements in ranking for most indicators but the most significant for UM is presence where its rank skyrocketed from 586th to 174th. This shows how UM’s website is comprehensive and well-integrated with its subdomains which provide ample links and files for its visitors.

Locally, UM remains undisputed at number one in Malaysia among 298 universities and colleges. With its current progress, University of Malaya is believed to be even more digitally accessible to boost the institution’s credibility in the future.
