What are the University’s semester dates?
The Academic Calendar is posted at http://www.ips.um.edu.my/Kalendar/AcademicCalendar.htm
2.
How many intakes are there for each Academic Year and when is the
advertisement for the new intake?
There are 2 intakes
i.e. July and December for programmes by Coursework and Coursework &
Dissertation.
The advertisement will be in January for July intake and
August for December intake in The New Straits Times
and Berita Harian newspapers.
Please check the application deadlines in the advertisement
and our website http://kemasukanpgrad.um.edu.my/
For programmes by full research (Dissertation and Thesis),
the intake is open throughout the year.
Admissions Requirements &
Application Process
1.
I am interested to know about the programmes offered and their entry
requirements. Where can I obtain this information?
The entry requirements for:
a.
Master
Programme by Coursework
b.
Master
Programme by Coursework and Dissertation
c.
Master
Programme by Clinical Coursework
are as follows:
i.
a
Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent;
or
ii.
a
professional qualification from a recognised professional body;
or
iii.
any
other qualification as may be approved by the Senate from time to time.
d.
Master
Programme by Dissertation
i.
a
Bachelor’s degree with honours or equivalent;
or
ii.
A
Bachelor’s degree with
a.
at
least three years of relevant working experience;
b.
proof
of publication in a related field;
or
iii.
a
professional qualification from a recognised professional body;
or
iv.
any
other qualification as may be approved by the Senate from time to time.
e. PhD
Programme
A Master’s degree or its equivalent in the related field.

How can I be selected for admission to a programme in UM?
Selection for admission is based on academic merit and open to competition
among eligible applications for places
available for the programme. Admission to programmes by
research (PhD and Masters by dissertation) also
depends on the quality of the research proposals submitted.
3.
What is the language requirement?
International candidates are required to have at least band 6
IELTS or a score of 550 TOEFL if:
they obtained their Bachelor’s Degree from a university in
which the medium of instruction is a language
other than English; and
or
they intend to write their
dissertation in English; and
or
the medium of instruction for the
intended course is English.
For programmes in Law Faculty, the language requirement is
TOEFL 600 and IELTS Band 7.
However international candidates (except for law programmes)
without the English language qualification may option to attend and pass the English
Languages Programme for Postgraduate Students course in lieu of the TOEFL or
IELTS qualification.

How long do I have to complete my studies?
The length of time required for completion of a programme
depends on the nature of the programme, and on
the progress of the individual student.

quoted are based on the minimum period of study. Additional fees will be charged
according to
the length of study period. In any case, the university
reserves the right to review the fees if
deemed necessary.

How do I pay my tution fees?
You can pay your fees on-line through internet banking, by
credit card at the Finance Section,
or by using Wang Tunai Masuk (WTM) slips at any Bumiputra
Commerce Banks. Details are in http://umisisweb.um.edu.my/
3.
Can I pay my tuition fees in instalments?
No, all tuition fees must be paid in full to “Bendahari
Universiti Malaya” or “Bursar, Universiti Malaya”.
